Deerfield New Hampshire Professor of Oratory: Moses True Brown (1827-1900)

Moses True Brown, son of Dr. Thomas & Mary “Polly” (Moore) Brown, was born 4 March 1827 in Deerfield NH.

He was home schooled by his parents, followed by attendance at Dartmouth College.  When he was only twenty-two years old he became principal of a grammar school in Manchester New Hampshire, and later of a high school in New Britain, Connecticut. He was also superintendent of schools in Toledo Ohio. In 1866 he chaired the first oratory department of Tufts university (1866-1890) where he obtained an A.M. degree in 1867.

He taught elocution and oratory in the Boston public school system from 1870 to 1874. In 1884 Moses True Brown founded the Boston School of Oratory, acting as its president until 1890, when he moved to Sandusky, Ohio.  When he died, Prof. Brown left his personal library to the public library of Sandusky, Ohio.

Today, Tufts University presents the Moses True Brown Prize that was established in 1903. [Note: Tufts says the prize was established by Moses True Brown. Since he died in 1900 this is not possible, unless he left funds in his will for same]. The prize is awarded, whenever a suitable candidate appears, to a senior majoring in drama who combines high achievement in dramatic scholarship with a strong potential for successful teaching in the field of dramatic literature, criticism, and theatre history.  Pulitzer Prize winner, Hamlin Garland, was one of his students.

  1. Victoria E Miller says:

Hello, My name is Vicki (Stupp) Miller, b. 1949 (IA).
I am a descendant of a son of your 3rd generation:
    Jonathan Brown (1700 – 1766) & Joanna Abba (1706 – 1757).
We are looking for his burial site.

We have found all the grave sites of their son
Capt. Joseph Brown (1741 – 1817) down to my Grandfather:
    Corydon H. Brown (1896 – 1951, IA).

Hope you’ll be able to help.
    Sincerely,
    Vicki

    • Janice Brown says:

      Hello Vicki.
      — I hope someone can give you a definitive answer. Someone on Find-A-Grave places him in a “Brown Cemetery” which is fictional I think, as no town or location is mentioned.
