Not New Hampshire: Henry Prince Nourse, 4th Great Grandson of Rebecca (Town) Nurse

NURSE Henry Prince watermarked

Henry Prince Nourse of Salem MA (1862-1928). This photograph is dated to the 1870-80s.

A handsome young man named Henry Prince Nourse stares out from this lovely tin-type photograph. He was not from New Hampshire, but the pose was charming enough that I bought it, to write about him.

He did not fall far from the tree,” as the saying goes, as he was born in 1862 in Salem, Essex Co., Massachusetts, the son of Aaron and Harriet Matilda (Kimball) Nourse.  He was also the 4th great-grandson of Rebecca (Towne) Nurse who was murdered, after being convicted of witchcraft, during the so-called “Salem Witchcraft Trials.”

In 1900 Henry married Edith H. Scott, and was the father of several children.  By profession, he was a letter carrier and expressman, working for the U.S. Postal Service.  He was also active in his community, and served as master of Starr King Masonic Lodge from 1908-1909.  He died on May 28, 1928 and is buried in the Burying Point Cemetery in Salem. His genealogy follows.

Thank you for adding this. He was my great grandfather, I descend from his Daughter Dorothy and I grew up in Merrimack NH but my job moved me to Salem Ma. and I’ve begun tracing my ancestors.

Nancy, thanks for reading my story and posting a reply. Glad that you connected with the photograph of your great-grandfather, he was a good looking guy! Glad too that you are going to trace your family tree–its always been fascinating to me at what you can discover about yourself when you look at your ancestors. Happy Holidays.
