The Colby and Phelps Families of Bow and Northfield, New Hampshire

Leonard & Rosella (Phelps) Colby of Northfield and Bow, New Hampshire, from a gem sized tintype.

Leonard & Rosella (Phelps) Colby of Northfield and Bow, New Hampshire, from a gem sized tintype.

It is remarkable how many families I find myself connected with in New Hampshire.  Here is yet another case where I purchased a lot of identified gem-sized tintypes on ebay, researched them, and found that they were related, albeit distantly, to me.  In this particular case. They are of Leonard & Rosella (Phelps) Colby of Bow, Merrimack County NH, and then about the same time I purchased an additional tin-type of her parents, David & Irena (Davis) Phelps of Northfield, NH.  Their genealogies, and additional photographs, are found directly below.

The Colby, Phelps, Davis and Yeaton families of Northfield New Hampshire are greatly connected.  Those families married and intermarried several times, weaving strong connections are you will discover below.

  1. billwest says:

    Yep, double cousin connections.!

  2. Dennis says:

You may also want to look at the Rowell tree…….Franklin NH (next to Bow and Northfield) had a police chief in the 1980’s name of Rowell. I worked for him until he retired in 1981

  3. Ha, I’m also a descendant of Thomas Colby and Hannah Rowell– they were my 8th greats, twice, since I’m descended from two of their children (Hannah and Jacob). Also descended from three of Thomas’s siblings, making Anthony and Susannah Colby my greats four times over (9th, 10th, and 11th). So Leonard would be my cousin, and so are you– even better! 🙂

  4. Derek says:

Leonard is my paternal great, great grandfather.

  5. Chet Ogan says:

My GG grandfather moved to Gainesville, Alabama in 1839 with Cyrus Colby (21 Nov 1821 d 13 Apr 1849 Gainesville, Alabama- son of Ebenezer Colby and Sally Abrams). He married Martha Crook and had a son Cyrus Barry Colby b 10 Jul 1849 d 21 Aug 1935 in Pasadena, CA. He married Susan Thompson in 1871 in Littlerock, Arlansas, and with his father-in-law Managed a cattle ranch near Texarkana, Texas. The property sold in 1892 and Cyrus moved to Little Rock as a cattle broker with his son. In 1922 he turned that business over to his son and moved to Pasadena where his daughter lived.
