Some Descendants of John Brown of Hampton, New Hampshire

The Common, Hampton Falls, New Hampshire, from an old postcard.

I can almost see a few of my readers, shaking their heads in dismay, as they look at the title.  Oh no!  Not another Brown family.  The Brown surname in New Hampshire is about as prevalent as leaf peepers in the Fall–they are everywhere, and they look so much alike.  I myself have two Brown connections, only not with the Brown line I am about to present to you.

John Brown was one of the earliest settlers of what is now Hampton, Rockingham County, New Hampshire.  He and his wife, Sarah Walker, had several children.  However, in this article I will follow only one of John Brown’s lines to David Brown, 7th generation who was living in Sanbornton, New Hampshire.

  1. Pamela Compton says:

John Browne did not marry Sarah Walker. She married John Tisdale Sr. in 1644. They were my great great grandparents. John Browne was the uncle of Sarah, James and Phillip and possibly the brother of their mother, Elizabeth Browne Walker.

    • Janice Brown says:

Pamela, I can appreciate your research however, you have not provided any primary evidence for me to change my statement. Plus, of course Sarah Walker was a fairly common name, surely there could have been two of them. So I have simply added a “?” mark after Walker. All the sources I just re-visited seem to agree John Browne’s wife’s name was Sarah Walker. Again, thank you for reading and commenting.

  2. Lenore Hilliard Palmer says:

I am descended from two Brown families, myself. John and Sarah as well as the other Brown Family from Salsbury/Newbury Ma
area. I am attempting to trace my 4th great grandfather John Brown back to either one of these two families. He was born 1795 in Bristol, I believe to Hannah Gove and Jonathan Brown, but have yet to prove this line.

    • Jessica Smith says:

I am related to the Browns/ Eaton’s/ Fowlers in Seabrook NH and Salisbury MA. My great great grandfather was Bonevesta Brown, and his wife was Nancy Brown. They had a son Alvin Brown who married my great grandmother Maude Brown (Fowler) and they had Nettie, Mildred and Emily and Lester. Mildred is my grandmother Roberta’s biological mom. She married a Fowler ( lots of inbreeding back the) and had Robert, Roberta, Julia and Alvin

  3. Mark Robitaille says:

I have purchased a home on sanborn rd tilton nh. In bringing the home back to life . The house is on the left before the old sanborn or lane house could use some help with the old history .we have lived in sanbornton most of our lives . Thank you Mark & Janet Robitaille

  4. Kristine Davenport says:

Janice Brown, I’m also a descendant of John Brown of Hampton, NH. I agree with Pamela Compton. There were many John Brown(e)s that came from England from 1634 to 1640. The John Brown commonly tied to the John Brown in Hampton, NH, was by trade, a successful well educated baker who came to America with a 15yr old employee and his 17 year old sister with some records saying they were related to Mr. Brown. Although I took for granted they were one in the same, I can’t reconcile why the baker would change professions once he landed in America. Thanks for your time.

    • Janice Brown says:

Kristine, I am not necessarily disagreeing with you. The link from John Brown actually goes to a web site that questions whether Sarah Walker was his wife, so I added a ? after her name. For now I have removed Sarah’s name completely, and left the link to a nicely written article about John Brown. Now the matter should be settled 🙂

  5. I am a direct descendant of John Brown (~1595-1686) through his son Benjamin (1647-1736). According to the genealogy my family has done, John’s wife was Sarah Walker. From the best I can gather of sources, it looks as though this information came from a John Brown descendant, Asa Warren Brown: https://genealogylizgauffreau.com/2016/10/01/the-hampton-n-h-brown-family/.

  6. keith whitten says:

  7. rba910 says:

Hope I’m not too late. I’m looking for the parents of Margaret Brown ab. 1800 who married David Bagley. Warner, Merrimack county, NH.

  8. Joseph Jalbert says:

My maternal grandmother was a Brown and I have traced my ancestry back to John Brown of Hampton, NH. John Brown has been one of the toughest individuals to find information regarding his place of birth, parents and when he actually came to America. There were many John Brown/Browne’s that came to America and at least five different John Browne’s/Browns came to the Plymouth Colonies during the Great Migration. One John Browne was Peter Browne’s brother (Peter was a passenger on the Mayflower in 1620.) John traveled later, arriving with his wife and children.

My research indicates that John Brown of Hampton may have traveled the Colonies landing in Boston with a Sarah Walker and her brother which may have been his niece and nephew. They also say he was a baker in England, but there is no indication that he continued as a baker after migrating to Hampton. Instead according to Hampton records John was a large land owner and had at least 8 children.

I will continue my research and if I learn anything new I will post the information that I find.
